Overview

Among Us is an online multiplayer game of deceit and survival from developer InnerSloth, which is currently taking the world by storm on Steam and iOS and Android devices with hundreds of thousands of downloads and great reviews.

Roles

There are currently three roles in Among Us, and we will break down each one of these roles in the list below:

  • Crewmate
  • Impostor
  • Ghost

 

⠀Crewmate

The Crewmate is one of two possible randomly assigned roles in the game Among Us.

The primary goal of a Crewmate is to complete all tasks while not being killed by the Impostor(s), with the secondary goal being Finding The Impostor and ejecting them off the ship. Crewmates who have been killed by An Impostor or ejected become ghosts.

There are three ways for the Crewmates to win the game:

  • The Crewmates vote out all The Impostors/The Impostor.
  • The Crewmates complete all their tasks.
  • The Impostors leave the game.

The Crewmates are assigned various tasks such as fixing color-coded wiring, uploading data, refueling engines, and memorizing patterns, to start a reactor.

When The Impostor kills a crew member, their body is dropped to the ground, completely broken in half with a bone sticking out, and a ghost will appear from the body. In this state, a Crewmate can move freely through the walls, without having to cross an entire corridor to reach the destination, and can do tasks. However, the only disadvantages are that their messages in the chats do not appear to the remaining survivors, they cannot start an emergency meeting or resolve sabotages. Ghosts also are not visible to players that are still alive.

Ghosts can also use the chat feature outside of meetings to chat with other ghosts. A Crewmate disappears after it is reported, and if someone reports another body or an emergency meeting is called. If the Crewmate has a pet, it will stay on the spot they have died, only visible to ghosts.

⠀⠀😃 How to play

The role you’ll most frequently be assigned, crewmates are tasked with completing tasks scattered throughout the space station or ship. These tasks are listed in the top left of your screen, and they can be completed in any order. Before you even start playing, if you are on PC, I strongly recommend changing the controls over to mouse and keyboard, instead of just the mouse. Trust me, only using the mouse will make you far more comfortable with killing especially if you’re brand new.

When the game starts, I recommend trying to get as many of your tasks done as possible. Try to stick in a group to ensure that the impostor doesn’t pick you off. This will also give you some deniability if others begin to accuse you of being the murderer. You’ll always want to focus on getting your tasks done, as it’s one of the only ways your team can actually win. These are small mini-games that range from scanning your ID card to getting rid of the trash to blowing up asteroids. However, I recommend holding off on doing certain tasks like the medical scanning in the Medbay, as other players can see you visually completing this. Since impostors cannot complete tasks, showing you finishing one is definitive proof you are a crewmate.

Try not to wander off on your own too much, as this will most likely lead to your death. If you need to complete a task where no one is, be cognizant of your surroundings. Impostors can jump out of any vent, giving them easy access to almost every room on every map. Inversely, if you are in a group, try to keep at least some distance from your other teammates. If everyone is stacked on top of one another, the impostor could kill someone and make it impossible to decipher who it was. By spacing out when moving with people, the killer would need to move next to you physically.

⠀⠀🔰 Abilities

  • Use

    This is the main ability used by all players to interact with most objects throughout the map. It is used to access tasks, fix sabotages, press the emergency button, and open decontamination doors.
    The Use button will be replaced by specific buttons when players are near special abilities, such as Admin or Doorlog. Additionally, Impostors have the sabotage button replacing it at all times (except when they’re near a special ability, a sabotage fix, or near a vent). Ghosts can complete tasks with the Use button but cannot fix Sabotages or call emergency meetings. The E or space key on PC is the Keybind for Useability.

  • Report

    The report button calls a meeting if a dead body is found. This teleports every player into the map’s main area (like the Cafeteria or the emergency button) where nobody can move. The meeting makes every player capable of talking in the chat and voting for An Impostor. If a Crewmate or an Impostor sees a dead body, they can report it.

  • Security

    When accessed, security displays fixed parts of the maps (usually corridors) in real-time, as if a player was there. They are unaffected by vision settings or light sabotages, but the communications sabotage disables them until they are fixed. Cameras can be used to know where players went/come from, piece together the events preceding a murder, or even catch impostors murdering/venting on screen.
    On the other hand, players using the cameras cannot move, see/hear their immediate surroundings, nor report a body. Additionally, for Impostors, they can’t access sabotage and have their kill cooldown paused while they’re watching the cameras.

  • Admin

    When in the Admin room, clicking the button next to the map will show what room everyone is in, using Yellow to anonymize players. The map does not show exact positions and updates when someone changes rooms. It also does not show when people are in the corridors. Impostors that are inside of a vent are shown on the map. Dead bodies are also shown on the map. It is used mainly to verify a Crewmate or Impostor being in a room at a certain time.

  • Vitals

    You can find the vitals device in the office. This ability is used to check players’ vital signs to see who is alive, dead, or disconnected. The players appear in the order that they joined the lobby.

  • Door Log

    The sensor is activated when a Crewmate/Impostor walks over the sensors. This can also trigger when the user stands completely still on the sensor, implying it is not motion activated, meaning the player doesn’t necessarily need to move to activate the sensors.

    When one of these sensors is activated, there is a cooldown of 5 seconds before logging the user again. The cooldown only applies to one respective user; thus, the Door log can detect multiple users as long as that respective user’s cooldown on the sensor is available.

    The log holds a maximum of the 20 most recent events. Once full, the log will remove the oldest event to make room for the new one. Each sensor has its cooldown, and you can think of it to be similar to door sabotages, where it has its respective cooldowns.

    Aside from clearing room for new entries when full, the log is never deleted. However, during a Communications sabotage, the log cannot be viewed, and the sensors do not record movement. This means that any movements during the comms outage are unaccounted for in the Door log, making it unreliable for catching impostors or clearing crewmates.

    Note: In the beta version, the log is deleted after a Communications sabotage.

    There are three sensors:

    1. The North Sensor which flashes blue when activated.
    2. The Southwest Sensor which flashes green when activated.
    3. The Southeast Sensor which flashes orange when activated.

 

⠀⠀💡 Tips

  • Don’t talk too much. People often talk themselves into being ejected from the group.
  • Stop trusting people. Imposters will say anything to survive.
  • Be clear when asked what you were doing. Vague statements will cast doubt on you.
  • It’s okay to skip voting if you’re unsure of who to believe.
  • If you know for a fact someone is an imposter, be confident and direct when outing them to the group.

 

⠀⠀📌 Finding the Imposter

Among Us, Crewmates can seek and vote out The Impostor. However, this requires a great deal of trust and certainty. Impostors will probably try to frame other Crewmates, and Crewmates may wrongly suspect someone of being An Impostor.

There are a few ways that The Impostor can be found with 100% certainty:

  • A crewmate sees An Impostor kill, either in person or on security cameras.
  • A crewmate sees An Impostor enter or exit vents.
  • A crewmate enters a room, notes the people inside, exits, stands outside the door, and notices a person leaving the room who was never in the room. This means The Impostor vented into the room.
  • A crewmate sees An Impostor fake a task, such that the taskbar does not go up or such that The Impostor fails to follow a certain order in doing tasks.

Note that the taskbar will only go up if the task is fully completed. For example, in the Divert Power task, diverting the Electrical power will not make the taskbar go up. However, receiving the power in another location such as Shields will make the taskbar go up.
An example of the task order is the Download Data task, wherein The Skeld, Admin, is always the last location needed to complete the task. If a player appears to upload data in Admin first, they are An Impostor.
Another example is the Water Plants task in MIRA HQ. If a player appears to water the plants before they got the watering can out of Storage, they are An Impostor.
You can identify The Impostor if they do a common task that you don’t have, such as Fix Wiring.

⠀⠀⚠️ Suspicious Activities

Suspicious activities do not mean that someone is An Impostor, but they can be a good indication of who should be watched more closely. Here is a list of suspicious activities:

  • Wandering around aimlessly and not appearing to do any tasks.
  • Walking away from a dead body.
  • Not helping during sabotages.
  • Accusing players who turn out to be Crewmates when ejected.
  • Faking a visual task if they are enabled.
  • Faking doing a Common Task, which is not registered to any other player. Likewise, running past a common Task when it has been assigned.
  • Only do short tasks when multiple Crewmates nearby are doing tasks, leaving the same time in a Task when another Crewmate finishes.

 

⠀⠀✅ Exceptions

If a player is seen doing something suspicious, these reasons should be considered before accusing:

  • If a Crewmate finishes all their tasks, they might wander around looking for suspicious behavior.
  • Someone may not see a dead body if it is behind an object, such as a table.
  • Someone may distance themselves from the body to look for another body to know if it was a double kill.
  • Some players might purposely pretend to be suspicious and get themselves ejected for no reason.
  • Color-blind people may have a hard time telling two people apart. If a Crewmate is falsely accused, then ejected, it is possible the accuser was color-blind and could not tell. This is, of course, not always the case.

 

⠀⠀👁️ Trivia

  • A curious case is when a Crewmate is dead while a body is reported, so, when the discussion ends, their body will appear in the lobby, consequently leading to another discussion.
  • On the Crewmate’s back, there is a “backpack” that serves a new use. While one would assume that their packs are for oxygen, it appears not to be the case, as oxygen depletion causes The Impostors to win. It’s possible that with a lack of proper weapons, the Crewmates donned their spacesuits, including the backpacks, as a form of protection against any threats rather than to survive in space.
  • When killed, Crewmates do not display any blood or internal organs from certain animations. After death, their corpse shows a single, large bone.
  • There is an in-game pet called the Mini Crewmate. It is unknown if this pet is a child of the Crewmate’s species, an artificial lifeform made in their image, or some robot.
  • It didn’t take long to create the Crewmate design. The only other concepts were a version without a backpack, resembling the Mini Crewmate, and one shaped like a star.
  • The Crewmate’s species is unknown. While at first glance they appear to be cartoonish humans in almost-featureless colored space suits, the MedBay scanner states the Crewmates are only three feet six inches (approximately one meter) tall, much shorter than a human. However, like humans, they do require oxygen to survive.
    Their hands are also not visible when not in use and only show up when pressing the emergency button. The Impostor kills with a gun or knife (both Crewmates and Impostors’ hand’s show) when being ejected in Polus with confirming ejects on. They also lack arms, and their hands appear suspended in mid-air.
  • Upon movement, all Crewmates, and Impostors, will have a “squinted” viewing visor.
  • With a height of 3′ 6″ and a weight of 92 lbs, all crewmates have a BMI of 36.7, which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, equates to Class 2 obesity.
  • Originally in the beta version, the viewing visor would not be a baby blue like color. It would be the same color as the suit.
  • Several video game websites criticize the Crewmate role, one of the Rock, Paper, and Shotgun, as Craig Pearson considered this role “exhausting.”

 

⠀Imposter

The Impostor is the main antagonist and one of the two possible roles in Among Us.

The Impostor’s primary goal is to kill enough Crewmates to have an equal amount of Impostors and Crewmates before all tasks are completed and have their true identity remain hidden.

The Impostor cannot complete any tasks; however, they are given a fake task list as general guidance on how to feign a Crewmate’s behavior. Impostors have the ability to Sabotage to force Crewmates to perform specific tasks, which, if failed by the Crewmates, will lead to a win for The Impostor(s).

⠀⠀📊 Chances of being an impostor

Depending on the game settings, there can be 1-3 Impostors in a game. Impostors are randomly chosen when the game begins. Every player has an equal chance to be The Impostor. This chance does not change regardless of your record as An Impostor or Crewmate; it is consistently random between all players.

⠀⠀🔰 Abilities

  • Kill

    An Impostor can kill a Crewmate. Killing a Crewmate leaves a dead body in the spot they were killed, and the crewmates turn into a ghost. Kills have a cooldown of 10–60 seconds and a kill distance of either Short, Normal, or Long, which depend on the game options.

    In the view of The Impostor, when killing someone, the player’s body is broken in half, where after a few seconds, they fall to the ground, exposing their bone. As the kill occurs, The Impostor will teleport to the player in a flurry of grey scribbles, blood will spurt, and the body will collapse after a few seconds. In the Crewmate victim’s view, while their body falls to the ground, an animation is shown, which can appear in different ways; either the crew member is shot, stabbed several times, impaled, or has their neck snapped.

    The kill cooldown pauses while The Impostor is inside a vent, looking through security cameras, accessing the admin map, looking through logs, or fixing sabotage.

    The kill cooldown is shortened to 10 seconds on the first round, before any meetings, and set to the standard cooldown time after a body has been reported or an emergency meeting is called.
    The killing ability also forces The Impostor to move instantaneously to the Crewmate’s location, essentially teleporting there, leaving a faint trail of their presence in their previous place. If the kill distance is set to ‘Short’ or ‘Long,’ teleporting distance will vary.

  • Sabotage

    An Impostor can Sabotage, which creates a temporary problem that Crewmates must either wait out, ignore, or fix. Impostors can fix their own Sabotage, which may help them avoid suspicion. Impostors who are ghosts can also sabotage. On the maps The Skeld and Polus, Impostors can close doors to hinder player movement or conceal the suspicious activity.

    The Reactor Meltdown and the O2 Shutdown are sabotaged that, if unfixed, will result in an instant win for The Impostor. Sabotaging lights or communications will not result in a win but will make it harder for Crewmates to perform their objectives.

    The Reactor Meltdown Sabotage (or The Seismic Stabilizer Sabotage on Polus) is a type of Sabotage where two Crewmates must press a button at the same time to stop the meltdown of the reactor, or else The Impostor will win. This forces more than one Crewmate to go to the area and stop the Sabotage instead of only one Crewmate stopping the Sabotage.

    In the O2 Shutdown Sabotage, the oxygen on the map will deplete, and a passcode must be inserted at two different locations to stop it, or else The Impostor will win. Unlike the reactor meltdown, however, one Crewmate can insert both codes. The O2 Sabotage is not present on the Polus map.

    The Communications sabotage will make finding their tasks much harder, forcing them to fix communications; however, it can be ignored. A communications sabotage will also disable functions such as Admin, Door Lock, Vitals, and Security Cameras for all players, regardless of whether they are An Impostor or Crewmate. The Sabotage requires Crewmates to find the correct frequency for communication on The Skeld and Polus and requires two different passcodes to be inputted on the MIRA HQ map.

    The Lights sabotage will lower the Crewmates’ vision; it often plays with their eyes and makes them suspect one another when a nearby Crewmate is killed. This can also be ignored; however, it is not recommended due to the higher chance of not finding the dead body of Crewmates and not seeing nearby players who are potential Impostors. This Sabotage requires Crewmates to go to Electrical (Or Office on MIRA HQ) and flick light switches to reset the lights. If the vision settings are set to 4.0 or higher, the Sabotage will have no strong effects except disabling the emergency button.

    The Impostor can Sabotage Doors, closing them for 10 seconds. This Sabotage has a 17-second cooldown, which begins when the door is initially sabotaged, meaning that after the door opens, The Impostor will have to wait 7 seconds before closing it again. Sabotage cannot be accessed beside or inside vents. In the Polus map, the doors must be opened manually by flipping the switches in the right way.

    All sabotage cooldowns are shared between all Impostors, so you may hamper your teammate if you sabotage something. All sabotage cooldowns besides doors are the same, so by sabotaging one thing, you activate a cooldown for all other sabotages (except the doors).

  • Vent

    The Impostor can hide in vents. Vents allow The Impostor to either hide or quickly move around the map. When close enough to a vent, the Sabotage button will be replaced with the vent button. However, hiding in a vent pauses both kill and sabotage cooldowns until The Impostor exits the vent. The Admin panel can still detect Impostors hiding in the vents of a room.

  • Report

    When a player gets near a dead body, the report button becomes usable. Like the crew, Impostors can use this ability to report dead bodies anywhere. This is also a form of disguise whose purpose is to avoid suspicion. When reporting, this opens up the moment of discussion about who The Impostor is.

  • Use

    Impostors also have this ability to interact with only the emergency button, the Admin Panel, Security, Vitals, Door Lock, Communications, Reactor, Lights, and O2.

 

⠀⠀☢️ Rush attack strategies

  • Single

    • Playing aggressively at the start of the round to get at least two easy kills can be efficient as long as the group stays split. Twice as effective when in double Impostor games as long as double kills are in sync.
    • This approach is more effective against groups who tend to go for quick task wins rather than catching The Impostors.
    • Players tend not to vote on suspicious behavior near the start since it’s generally better not to risk losing people early if it means quick task completion.
    • Combine with lights out to secure kills near witnesses and then vent to fix lights.
    • Since the aim is to kill right out of cooldowns, check admin to get locations and vent in on a lone target.
    • Generally, vote with the crowd to prevent ties.
    • Rotate between kills and sabotage to keep task progress low rather than combo kills since you’ll be playing against the clock.
    • Self-reporting is risky as The Impostor if you have not built up alibis throughout the round.

     

  • Doubles

    • Pretend to buddy up with the other Impostor at the start of the game. Trail behind the leading group slightly and attack when two targets are positioned near a vent. Escape into the vent soon after.
    • With some luck, the Crewmates can argue amongst themselves, oblivious of the second death in the area.
    • Both votes on the accused to guarantee an ejection generally.

     

  • Triples

    • Kill a Crewmate as quickly as possible. If every Impostor does this, then they can vote out one more Crewmate securing the win.

 

⠀⠀👴🏻 Slow play strategies

  • Single

    • Rather than rushing to secure kills, try and infiltrate the group and feign innocence by sticking to large groups. Faking tasks is much less noticeable with this method.
    • Select a few members to follow around and do tasks to gain their trust while killing other Crewmates when the group is otherwise occupied.
    • If a player offers to prove their innocence through visual tasks, go along with it. This only furthers your trust with the Crewmate(s).
    • Only kill with an exit plan so you can create an alibi when the body is found.
    • Later into the game, you can risk a self-report if you think it is split to get a member hopefully removed.
    • When voting begins, remain neutral to start while maintaining confidence when interrogated or accused. Perhaps voting people off aggressively isn’t the right approach initially, but generally, don’t lead the conversation but remain confident when interrogated.
    • Spend a lot of time memorizing where you are and what tasks you could have been doing while killing someone.
    • Be wary of the taskbar as it should dictate your pace of work.
    • Use cameras once you’ve claimed to have finished tasks.
    • With slow play, sabotage is your best friend. Sabotaging lights is primarily useful, as it allows you to make aggressive plays without risk of being accused.
    • Use doors to trap targets for safe kills or make Crewmates suspicious of others they were trapped with.

     

  • Doubles

    • Stay away from your partner to have different alibis and make sure neither of you is in danger of being voted. Be aware of how vouching aggressively raises suspicion.
    • To set up long-range sabotage kills, play on opposite map sides to increase the chances of killing multiple Crewmates with singular sabotage.
    • Only kill players when there alone or with your partner.
    • Work with your partner when you’re an Impostor.

 

⠀⠀📌 General strategies and plays

  • Drop Kill

    On maps with a drop-ship or entry zone, fake a task before making a kill. Afterward, sabotage something (preferably lights) and run away. Take care not to run into anyone who may check for this, or they will accuse you.

  • Death Chamber

    On The Skeld or Polus, head to Admin and use it to find a solo Crewmate. Immediately lock their room and get in as fast as possible, checking if cams are on before venting. Secure the kill before sabotaging lights and venting out to fix them. This eliminates suspicion because the body won’t get found until lights are fixed, and no one can confirm you were in the kill room. Note that a kill room is only valid if it has both doors and a vent. A fast lock is crucial to avoid a second Crewmate entering the targeted place. If this happens, you’ll get caught venting in. Learn vent links before trying this strategy; it dramatically improves success chances.

  • Blind Sighted Kill

    When a Crewmate does their task, a large area of their screen is usually covered mainly to focus only on that task, limiting their view of their surroundings. You can kill nearby Crewmates in front of Crewmates who are distracted doing swipe cards. However, take note this strategy is hazardous, as you cannot tell if a Crewmate is genuinely doing their task or pretending to be to catch the killer in the act, which has high risks and high rewards after all.

  • Vent Body Camp

    Kill a target over a vent and call sabotages that don’t lead people to your location. Hide nearby and when your kill ability’s cooldown ends, hide in the Vent and wait. When another person arrives, kill them and repeat the sabotage to stop Crewmates from reporting the body. This is usually a bad idea to do as the Crewmates press the button if they felt something odd in their surroundings, such as disappearing Crewmates who never appeared once again and a very suspicious person staying in the same location.

  • Skeld Light Kill

    On The Skeld map, head to the day at the game’s start. When your kill cooldown ends, sabotage the lights and vent into the Electrical area. Kill the first person to arrive and vent out to frame whoever enters next. This is effective because nobody else would have reasonably seen the body beforehand.

  • Sabotage Final Kill

    When in a 2v1 or 3v1 situation, call sabotage on a fatal emergency (such as reactor) and wait near it. Kill or double kill whoever enters. Since you can call it quicker than an emergency meeting can be called in most cases, you can’t be stopped unless a body is found. This practically guarantees a win.

  • Immunity Killer

    If a player proves they aren’t The Impostor through a visual task (such as Medbay scan), killing them is a high priority. They become the most trustworthy player in the lobby; otherwise, so being caught by them guarantees your demise.

  • Public Enemy Number 2

    If a suspicious innocent player is present in the round, go out of your way not to kill them but those who have targeted them. Always vote to tie to waste voting phases and keep pressure off yourself.

  • Self-reporting

    Simply the act of reporting a body you killed. It can be used to inspire trust if you double back and ‘find’ it with other Crewmates or accuse another innocent to win the round. Be wary. However: if used repeatedly, its effectiveness can be mitigated. This tactic is dangerous on Polus because vital signs can show the crew that the body was reported immediately after being killed.

  • Crowd Kill

    First, gather at least 4 Crewmates together to one spot. This can be done quickly by sabotaging lights or comms. Then, when everyone is on top of each other, fake doing the task and then kill someone. The body will be reported within seconds. This is a pretty easy way to avoid suspicion because everyone is on top of each other. This could also get a Crewmate ejected from the group if accused. However, this is a risky strategy if used multiple times in succession, as Crewmates may notice that you are always present in the group.

  • Talking

    Make sure you speak during meetings. It has been said you shouldn’t talk unless spoken to during meetings, but people will get very suspicious of your silence. However, talking too much may give yourself away as it may seem you are stalling for the meeting to end. Do not accuse too much, and when someone suspects you, stay calm and tell them why you are innocent. Acting confused can also work. Make sure to use a consistent tone of voice in meetings, so your voice tone doesn’t give you away either.

  • Kill the Suspectors

    With common sense being noted, kill the suspectors first with the highest priority. Make sure they won’t be able to pin suspicions on you at meetings. However, this strategy is hazardous as Crewmates may remember that the Crewmate suspected you are now dead.

  • Play Dumb

    Let’s get an example: You or your fellow Impostor (if you’re in a match of 2 or 3 Impostors.) had called critical sabotage, like a Reactor Meltdown or Oxygen Depletion, pretend to try to fix the sabotage, then when somebody is close enough, kill them, then go back to pretend to resolve the crisis as soon as possible, but this time, actually fix it or let somebody else report the body while you act. They won’t suspect anything, and you can say that you were resolving the crisis and couldn’t see anything; they’ll probably believe you and vote off the Crewmate that reported the body, thinking they did a self-report. This task is best done when there are 2 Impostors.

  • Betray your Impostor teammate

    If you see your teammate kill a Crewmate in front of you, report the body and tell them what you saw (it’s risky if they tell everyone about you being his teammate); this strategy is best done if you see them using the Play Dumb strategy, if they’re quick though, they can pull a self-report on you and blame you, you’ll be voted off, implying you’ve been played with the same strategy you tried to use. This strategy will also likely gain you some enemies in the lobby, as the trust you should have will be lost.

  • Do not Fake Common Tasks that you don’t have.

    Example: If you have the Swipe Card task but not the Fix Wiring task, do not fake the Fix Wiring task as it is a common task that no one else has (unless the Common Tasks are shared among the other Crewmates).

  • Self-Report if seen by a crewmate

    If you kill somebody, a crewmate sees you with the body, report it, and accuse the person that saw you. The people will believe more in you since you reported the body.

  • Join them

    Sabotage the lights on any map, then kill someone who is on their own. Vent to a Crewmates group, making sure that the lights are still off and that they can’t see you. Stick with them until the body is reported. The Crewmates you were with can give you a good solid alibi, as long as they don’t see your vent next to them.

  • Accusation

    For example, two people argue every meeting, you, The Impostor, simply kill one of them. When the body is found, people will tell the other person that they were arguing did it. Thus you’re in the clear.

  • Don’t defend your impostor teammate.

    Let’s say someone accuses your impostor teammate, and you try to defend them. If they get voted out, then they will vote you out next. Instead, stay silent and play along, but if you really want to keep your teammate, simply make up an alibi for them.

  • Kill if someone caught you venting

    Let’s say someone caught you venting. They will immediately call a meeting. Instead, kill them if they run, or if they get too far, simply use the vents to go to the cafe and kill them right on the spot. You could also sabotage, which will stop emergency meetings from happening until the sabotage is fixed.

Ghosts are players who have been killed by An Impostor or ejected by other players.

Ghosts have no collision and can freely travel through walls. They are invisible to both alive Crewmates and Impostors but can be seen by other ghosts. They also have an unlimited vision, which is not restricted by walls or sabotages. Ghosts cannot assist during sabotages, such as a Reactor Meltdown or O2 deprivation.

Ghosts can see and use the chat simultaneously. However, messages will not be shown to live players; only fellow ghosts will see them. This allows ghosts to chat with each other throughout the game, although ghosts cannot vote or kick other players during emergency meetings. They also cannot report bodies or call meetings.

Ghosts can still complete their tasks. However, some Visual Tasks such as scanning in Medbay will not give a visual cue. This is most likely to prevent Impostors from cheating and Crewmates from getting confused.

In The Skeld, Empty Garbage consists of two phases. The first phase is located in the Cafeteria, where Crewmates must go up to the lever and then open a trash can with a lever. The player must pull and hold the lever down until the garbage has been emptied.
The second phase is located in Storage and is located on a lever near a door outside the ship. Similarly, Crewmates must pull the lever and hold it until the trash is empty, and the door outside the ship will open, throwing all the trash out. This phase is a visual task.
Empty Chute consists of only one stage and is located in O2.
At MIRA HQ, Empty Garbage consists of just one stage located in the Cafeteria, similar to The Skeld. At Polus, the task is located in O2 and also consists of one phase.

  • The keyhole’s position is determined by how players entered the lobby, with the host always corresponding to the first keyhole on the left.
    • Because of this, it is possible to catch An Impostor lying if you ask them what keyhole they had. Example: They are the fifth player to join, but they say they had the one on the top right. This means they faked the task.
    • As An Impostor, you can look at the vitals screen to see which keyhole you would have had since vitals show players in spawning order. You could also look at your position at the start of the game or after an emergency meeting/ body report since those also depend on spawning order, but this is inconvenient since players tend to run away immediately after spawning/ meeting.
  • There is a Brain Slug attached to the keyring, which is a reference to Futurama. A purchasable hat and a pet with the same name also exists.
  • Like an Impostor, it’s easy to get a stacked kill if this is one of the tasks because everyone is likely to go to the same, nearest spot at the start of the game.

 

⠀Inspect Sample

Inspect Sample is a Long Task in Among Us, introduced in The Skeld.

🎮 Gameplay

  • Stage 1:
    When the player starts the task, a machine holding 5 test tubes will appear. The player must press the small green button on the bottom right of the machine. Once the button is pressed, the machine will quickly dispense a liquid into each test tube. The top of the machine will say, “ETA 59.”
    (ETA is an acronym for Estimated Time of Arrival. The number next to ETA represents the seconds remaining until the machine finishes analyzing the liquids.)
    After the green button is pressed, the player may leave the machine by pressing the “x” in the top left.
  • Stage 2:
    After 59 seconds, the player will need to return to the machine to complete the task. The player must press the green button below the red sample.
    If done successfully, the top of the machine will read, “THANK YOU!” and the bottom will read “TEST COMPLETE.”
    If one of the four blue samples are selected, the machine will read “BAD RESULT,” the green buttons will flash red, and the entire task will need to be done again.

  • Stage 1:

The screen will read “Reboot Required.” The player must pull the lever, which will begin a 60-second countdown process. The Wi-Fi will power off, and the “Tasks” tab will display the remaining amount of seconds left in the countdown, along with the screen. The player does not have to remain in Communications during the countdown, and they may perform other tasks during this time.
  • Stage 2:

  • Stage 1:
    When opening the task, the player must press the spacebar on a keyboard, which will begin a process to find anomalies on a ship in the launchpad. This process takes 90 seconds.
    Crewmates can leave this task, as the 90-second countdown will continue in the background while they do other things. Furthermore, staying at the launchpad and waiting for the countdown can make oneself an easy target for Impostors.
  • Stage2:
    After that time has elapsed, the player must return to the task and then select the model’s red location, which indicates the anomaly. After doing this, the player completes the task.

Starting a Reactor is a Long Task in Among Us, located in the Reactor on The Skeld and Mira HQ and in the Specimen Room on Polus.

When the player opens the task, a screen will appear on the left while a keypad appears on the right. The player must memorize the order blue squares appear on the left screen and then replicate it using the right keypad. There are nine possible blue square locations in a 3×3 grid. The player will have to memorize five patterns. The first pattern to replicate will be a single square, and the second will be two squares, and so on until a maximum of 5 yards. Because it may seem daunting to memorize the patterns, it is essential to know how predictably build on each other. For example, the second pattern will always start with the blue square from the first pattern. The fifth pattern will be the four blue squares’ order in the fourth pattern plus one new blue square.
The player must wait until the screen on the left finishes displaying the squares before entering the keypad pattern.

If the player enters a pattern incorrectly, the blue squares will flash red, and the process restarts in the same order as before. The player has another opportunity to memorize the pattern. The player may keep trying until they get it correct. However, skilled crewmates should be able to enter the patterns correctly and quickly.

Green lights above the screen on the left indicate how many patterns have been successfully replicated. Green lights above the keypad on the right indicate the number of squares the player has currently selected for the pattern so far.

When an emergency meeting is called or voluntarily leave the task, or a body is reported, the player’s progress is saved. After opening the task panel again, the left screen will display the squares required to press on the keypad.

⠀Submit Scan

Submit Scan is a Long task in Among Us, introduced in The Skeld. It reports the crewmate height (3’6”) and the crewmate weight (92lb), which are the same for all players, the color of the player along with its ID, and a random blood type.

🎮 Gameplay

This task consists of the player standing on top of a capsule that starts to scan themself, while their information is shown, all in about 10 seconds. While doing the task, a hologram that scans the player is shown both to themself and other players, making it a task that proves innocence, and thus, it becomes easier to discover The Impostor. Multiple players may not do the scan simultaneously and, instead, have to wait in a queue for the player who initiated the task first to finish.

In a game where visual tasks are off, you can still somewhat depict that the person scanning is a Crewmate by looking at their movement. Generally, a Crewmate would go outside the capsule so that they would automatically move in such a manner that it genuinely looks real. You can also know that it was real if the taskbar moves up after exactly 10 seconds. If multiple people have scans, even the inexperienced would know that the person scanning would be innocent as they will see the words.

⠀Swipe Card

Swipe Card is a common task in Among Us, completed on The Skeld and Polus.

🎮 Gameplay

The player must swipe the card inside the wallet on the draw frame. The card needs to be timed correctly. Swiping too slow or too fast or taking their hand off earlier will fail to complete the task, and consequently, the player must try again. It also introduces the player’s wallet with a picture of a small family.

For some players, this is one of the toughest tasks in Among Us, while it usually takes them about one to two tries for others. The trick here is for the player to control their swiping speed. This task is quite easy for mobile players. This task is decently hard because players need to get your timing exactly right. Many players also don’t swipe the card all the way to the other side, resulting in a bad read.

When they enter, the door closes, and the place emits steam, and after that, the other door opens.

Each features several tasks connected to a hallway right below them, which is the left entrance to the labs. The entrance and the drill pod have a camera right outside. On the right, a small Medbay is featuring a scanner. Right below is the upper decontamination room (its entrance facing the bathrooms), which leads to the Specimen Room.

Cosmetics are items in Among Us used to customize characters. The three types of cosmetics are hats, skins, and pets. Hats are worn on players’ heads, skins are worn on their bodies, and pets follow them around.
Some hats are free and automatically owned by the player on mobile platforms, while a variety of other cosmetics can be unlocked by paying real-world money (between $0.99 and $2.99). On the paid PC version, all skins and hats are free (except the ones included in the MIRA HQ and Polus bundles), but pets are still required to be bought to obtain. Purchases do not sync across platforms. Cosmetics can be bought via the main menu store, and owned cosmetics can be worn in the hub area before a game starts.
Hats, skins, and pets grant little gameplay advantage and mostly serve the sole purpose of supporting the developers. However, if an Impostor is running away or venting, people can identify them by a hat or pet because they make the space of their character larger. On the other hand, if someone is a Crewmate, then cosmetics could be used to verify that you were in a location. This can only be used in certain situations, as cosmetics are not shown during the discussion phase.
Some skins and hats slightly hide the color of the player, which can confuse other players. A player might be distracted by The Impostor’s clothing, then forget what color The Impostor actually is during an emergency meeting. The newest public beta of Among Us has the feature that a player’s hat and skin show up on their voting icon, but not their text icon. This is mostly to help colorblind people or stop the very thing explained above.

⠀⠀Emergency meeting

An emergency meeting occurs once the emergency button is pressed or after a body is reported. During emergency meetings, players are teleported to the Cafeteria/Office and cannot move as they talk and vote for other players they think might be Impostors. The player with the most votes will be ejected by the end of the meeting, although the ejection can be skipped if enough players vote for the skip option or if the votes are tied.

⠀⠀⠀🌗 Phases

Emergency meetings have a total of 3 phases, each serving their own purpose:

  1. Discussion
    The discussion phase is where the players can discuss several things to vote out any suspected Impostors. Players cannot vote during this stage. The host sets the specific amount of time for discussion before the game in the options. Some important topics of discussion include, but are not limited to:

    • Whether or not anyone saw someone kill, vent, or do anything else incriminating.
    • Who’s been acting suspiciously (“sus”)
    • Who’s a confirmed Crewmate, whether they be approved by a visual task with another crewmate watching, or even performing the said task themselves.
    • Where everyone was on the map at the time of the meeting.
    • Where the body was (if someone called the meeting after a report).

     

  2. Voting
    The voting phase is where each player votes for who they think is The Impostor. Players can still talk during the voting phase. At the end of voting, the player with the most votes will be ejected. Ejection can also be skipped if a tie occurs or if a majority of players vote to skip. To vote, a player must click on the username of who they want to vote for (or the skip button) and click the green checkmark to lock in their vote. Clicking the red cross will make the two options disappear and allow the player to instead vote for a new player or skip. As of Update v10.8, anonymous voting can be toggled. When Anonymous Voting is toggled via Game Settings, each player’s icons have been replaced with black icons. These make it so that you don’t know who has voted for who.
  3. Ejection
    Ejection occurs after all players have voted or the emergency meeting’s time runs out. During ejection, the votes will be shown, and the player with the most votes will be ejected. After being ejected, a player’s identity will be revealed, and they will be treated as dead, turning into a ghost and being allowed to wander the map for the rest of the game. However, like what was said above, ejection can be skipped depending on the votes.

 

⠀⠀⠀🔰 Strategies

  • As a Crewmate:
    • If you notice someone venting, faking a task, or doing anything only Impostors can do, immediately call an emergency meeting.
    • If you see someone vent and they start running after you, your best bet is to run to the nearest confirmed crewmate and stay with them until either The Impostor wanders away or until someone realizes you’ve been followed and can confirm the killer if you are killed.
    • Share information about the Tasks you have and make plans.
    • Share information about who can be trusted.
    • Impostors cannot fake Visual Tasks, which means that any player you see completing a visual Task can be trusted. There are four visual tasks. They are Submit Scan, Prime Shields, Clear Asteroids, and Empty Garbage.
    • Use this information to plan strategies and to find The Impostor(s).
    • If there is one player you’ve been with the entire game and not let out of your sights during one Impostor round, and someone else dies, you two can vouch for each other and effectively reduce the amount of guessing there would have to be.
  • As an Impostor:
    • Try not to act suspicious.
    • Do not suspect too many people, as this may make you seem suspicious. However, staying quiet the whole round might as well be just as bad. Go with the crowd and vote out as many Crewmates as possible.
    • The act of being suspicious may include, Following a Crewmate. They are not able to be pinpointed on the map. We are not doing any task. Doing a common task no one has, such as doing Fix Wiring on The Skeld when everyone only has Swipe Card or common tasks are off. Coming from a location without a task or with a vent. Not reporting a body. Obvious task faking such as completing Upload Data in under 5 seconds or doing Divert Power in 8 seconds or doing the second half of a task without doing the first half, such as doing Divert Power before going near electrical, where the first part is located.
    • If another Impostor gets suspected, try to cover for them.
    • However, this can be risky, as if they are discovered, you might be voted off for supporting them.
    • If you are caught venting by a singular Crewmate, you could lie and scold them for calling out their fellow Impostor mate if there are 2 or 3 Impostors, effectively getting your team an extra kill if they believe it.

 

⠀⠀⠀👁️ Trivia

  • There is a bug that a person who was killed by The Impostor. Simultaneously, someone called for an emergency meeting will show up as both dead and alive. However, they technically are dead since after the Emergency Meeting ends, the person who was killed during the whole ordeal would have their body appear in their spawn location.
  • There is a glitch in which if someone calls an Emergency Meeting or a dead body is reported when a person has finished a task, the person will be unable to move the meeting screen glitched out. However, the person can still hear the sounds and vote the users that are inside their screen. When the meeting ends, the glitched person will walk again, starting from the point where they were glitched, unlike the others, which started from the meeting table.
  • If an Impostor goes into or out of a vent while the meeting is called or body is reported, it is possible to see the vent animation by the Impostor.[/lit]

 

⠀⠀Ejection

An Ejection can occur, depending on the results, after every player has voted or the time has run out at the end of a vote.

⠀⠀⠀🎮 Gameplay

Ejection occurs when voting for a meeting is over; the player with the most votes will be ejected. If the Confirm Ejects are off, the game will state which player was ejected. With Confirm Ejects on, the game will display which player was ejected, along with whether they were an Impostor or not, and how many Impostors remain. If either the majority of the players skip the vote or tie in the voting, no one will be ejected. A tie can also occur between a player and skip voting. Once a player is ejected, they’re considered dead and, like players who were killed, are still allowed to roam the map as a ghost. Their pets or mini crewmates will stay near the spawn point and behave as if their owner was killed right there.

⠀⠀⠀🎥 Animations

    • The ejected player is shot out of the ship’s airlock and is shown flying through space.
  • Mira HQ
    • The ejected player is shown falling from the sky into a pit of dark clouds.
  • Polus
    • The ejected player is shown falling from a purple cliff into a pool of lava. If confirmed ejects are on, crewmates who are ejected will stick their hand out of the lava, as if they are calling for help, while impostors who are ejected will give a thumbs up. If confirmed ejects are off, the ejected player will splash into the lava, not showing any unique animation.

  • The Impostor sticking their thumb out of lava when they are ejected in the Polus map refers to Terminator 2: Judgement Day’s lava scene.

⠀⠀Freeplay

Freeplay is one of the game modes in Among Us, made for newer players to train their skills. It is currently the only single-player mode in the game.
In this mode, the player is free to explore any map outside of a regular game environment. A few “dummy” Crewmates are positioned around the map and don’t move or show any signs of life other than voting. (None vote you out) A laptop can be accessed (usually located near the Emergency Button) that allows for the player to freely Customize their required Tasks, as well as whether or not they are an Impostor. All abilities from a classic game, such as Sabotage and Report, are usable.
Freeplay is an excellent way to practice routes as a Crewmate, and as An Impostor, a player should always take advantage of what they can take on each map and plan what they want to do. Playing this mode can significantly increase your chances of winning during a typical play session. However, when all players are killed, all tasks are completed; a critical sabotage’s countdown ends (such as “Reactor Meltdown”), or when all the players are voted out, the game will restart.

👁️ Trivia

  • Freeplay is currently the only mode with NPC Crewmates.
  • When an Emergency Meeting is called or a dead body is reported, all dummies automatically either vote any alive Crewmates or skip voting. This can result in the player being ejected. This can also lead to a situation where they vote themselves.
  • Freeplay is currently the only mode where a player can switch from a Crewmate to an Impostor and vice versa.
  • Freeplay can be considered a training mode of sorts.
  • Unlike any other game mode, Freeplay does not require any source of the Internet to play.
  • You cannot change the look of your character while in Freeplay, and it will just resort to what you looked like last game.
  • There’s a glitch in Freeplay mode that involves vents on The Skeld and allows the player to turn invisible. This glitch also allows the player to vent as a Crewmate.

 

⠀⠀Vision

Vision is the area around a player in which they can see other players and dead bodies. Visually, this is represented by areas that are outside of a player’s vision being shaded.
Players’ vision is set at a certain radius around them but is obstructed by walls and closed doors. Vision around corners is limited to a straight line tangent to the corner.
Crewmates and Impostors can be given different levels of vision in the game settings in the waiting room. The lowest possible vision is 0.25×, and the highest possible vision is 5×. While Lights are sabotaged, Crewmate’s vision is limited, whereas Impostors’ vision is not. Ghosts always have unlimited Vision.
Vision only affects the visibility of players and dead bodies. It does not affect the visibility of closed doors or vent animations—on maps where vents have a spirit when used (The Skeld and Mira HQ), player’s can see a vent opening or closing (but not who used the vent) even if it is outside of their vision.

⠀⠀Voting

Voting occurs after a dead body has been reported, or an emergency meeting has been called. Depending on the options, there can also be a discussion period before voting. The voting period can also be adjusted in the options. Every living player gets to cast a vote on who they think The Impostor is, and whoever has the most votes will get ejected. Players can also vote to skip, meaning their vote wouldn’t be cast. If there is a tie, nobody will get removed. After everybody votes or the time runs out, the options will be shown, and you can see who voted who.
In version 2020.10.22s, an option for anonymous voting was added. This means that you can’t tell who voted who.
