CODE VEIN – Evolving Guide on Everything in the Game [Update 5]

This is a continuously updating guide on tips, and things to help players both before they get started and after. Obviously, I don’t know everything about the game yet but I will edit things in as I grow aware of them.

General Common Questions

CODE VEIN - Evolving Guide on Everything in the Game [Update 5] - General Common Questions

Warning: This guide may include some minor spoilers about the game’s progress or length, and here we go..

Things that are good to know beforehand

「Point 1」 When you start to see Io standing before a boss fight (From Cathedral onwards), there are two options: One is to gain every memory fragment of that boss character and turn it into Io in order to get the character’s Blood Code. After you beat the boss, you can interact with the character’s petrified body to restore their memory, getting you their respective blood art.

The other is to beat the boss without turning in all the memories and getting the Queen’s Blood Art for that boss. This way, you will not be able to interact, and you will have to end the memory by going through the gate.

If there’s a certain Blood Code/Character you like that you achieve by defeating the associated boss (for me, it was Eva), I suggest you find all the memories beforehand. If you go into NG+, you can get the other one. This way, you can get both.

The Blood Codes and their respective queen variants:

Isis – Queen’s Ribcage
Fionn – Queen’s Breath
Scathath – Queen’s Claw
Harmonia – Queen’s Throat

「Point 2」 Blood Arts and the Memory Fragments (I believe they’re called “Vestiges” in EN), do carry over to NG+. However, the depth maps do not. The materials (Iron, Steel, Chitin, Tungsten) also do reset back to their respective order (You won’t find Tungsten at the beginning of NG+), so you probably want to max out any of your weapons before going onto NG+.

「Point 3」 There are a total of 32 Blood Codes – 33 if you bought the season pass (The Season pass blood code is “Astrea” (The Mia one before you get Mia’s “Artemis”)). 34 if you bought the Pre-Order (The Pre-Order blood code is “Harbinger”).

「Point 4」 Try not to over-level yourself too much. [Confirmed] It will cause you to master your skills slower once you hit the level cap for the area. If you care at all about mastering skills for different setups, don’t spend all your Haze into levels.

「Point 5」 By doing depth maps, you will get a permanent Blood Art Gift unlock once per map. Use them, and they will be added to your arsenal forever.

「Point 6」 In order to play Co-Op with your friend, you want to switch the steam download region to the same region, set up a password, and unlock regional matchmaking.

Stuck in the Story?

Most commonly: You have to talk to Io, both options, and talk with Louis.

“Investigate the City Ruins” go to the street from down the ladder where two dogs attack you. You will see some slave “Losts” following the leader “Lost” followed by another “Lost”. Go left until you come across a giant hole with a ladder. Parkour down. You will reach the Annoying Swamp Area from DS3 Water Area with a beautiful area boss ‘waifu’.

“Investigate the City Ruins, part 2”. teleport to the park. Go towards the three Losts sitting down. There’s a ladder to the right BEFORE you reach their aggro range. Go down, and you’ll see a goddess statue along with a ladder that isn’t down. Go up real close to the statue and investigate it. You will reach a maze that takes a ridiculous time to navigate the beautiful cathedral area.

“Finding Eva” you might remember coming across an area with purple rocks that lead down with a bunch of ladders, and put it off thinking it wasn’t leading to the snow mountain. You were right. Now you go down, and get to the next area, the… caves. Sewers?

Combat Tips [Update 1]

Your bar that turns blue when you dodge / get hit is your “Focus” bar. When it’s fully charged, you gain a chance to not be staggered (similar to Poise), fills your stamina to max, and you will become slightly tankier. In this state, you can also use a Launch Attack into an Aerial Drain move.

When you use any drain move, it will give you Ichor & Increase your max Ichor limit until you reset or die.

You can parry, and if successful, you will play a follow-through drain animation. If you get a kill this way, you gain Haze. You can parry bosses, but you will not be able to do a follow-through animation. Instead, you gain a window of time to attack them.

The type of Blood Veil you equipped will change your drain animation, and type of parry.
There are four types in total: Stinger, Hound, Ogre, and Vine. The parry animation & i-frame will differ for each type.

Status Effects & What they do [Update 1]

Venom (Poison) : Slowly drains HP.
Stun : Stuns you. (lol)
Banish : Silences you for the duration (you can’t use gifts).
Slow : Slows all action speed.
Leak : Lowers your stock (ichor).

Some tips for some Bosses I had trouble with

Butterfly: When she uses her charge attack, dodge into where she will move to at the end. You will dodge both the poison and be able to hit her multiple times.

Poledancer: After she pole-dances, she often slide-tackles you then spins around in a gigamassive AoE. Do not get hit by this move. You will likely not make it, and even if you do you’re slowed so much it feels like you got hit by a ZA WARUDO. Bring slow purify/cure.

Flamethrower Fatman & Ice Witch duo: Kill Ice Witch first, then the other. I used a combination of Fire Weapon Catridge Blood art & Ice Protection Blood art to quickly deal with her, then finish off Fatman. Fatman by himself is a joke. Your companion will likely fall, revive them until you are close enough to finishing it by yourself, as you will likely have to do so.

Juuzou Midou: When he surrounds you with four orbs in his second phase, you can dodge the explosions by knowing their timings: They will explode twice, two orbs per explosion. You will see an animation of the orbs “combining” briefly before bakuretsu. Dodge.

Hmm…

I’ll update as I learn more. Please tell me more about this game, I’ve been loving it lots. Check out my stream over at twitch.tv/MakotoKirisu to hear me flail helplessly as I get murdered by bosses (or breeze through them like I have for some). Also, ask me anything that’s not mentioned here.

CODE VEIN - Evolving Guide on Everything in the Game [Update 5] - 34 Blood Codes, Blood Gifts & What they do (Part 1) [Update 1&2]

There are Light gifts, and Dark gifts.
Usually, light gifts are buffs, removals, etc.
Usually, dark gifts are harmful spells, attacks, etc.

Thanks a lot to BaelZephyr for helping with Blood Codes information & translation!

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

Weapon Drain Rating Up is the only gift that stood out, as it can cause you to be able to spam your gifts more often. Blood Shot and Blazing Roar are decent offensive active skills, but are nothing too special.

Iron Will (Active) – Reduces the damage you take.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

Berserker has strong stats, and is a viable code for heavier builds with its 250 weight and high STR. Iron Will can help you become incredibly tanky, but the other gifts are somewhat lackluster and can be replaced.

One-handed Sword Mastery (Passive) – When using OH-Sword, you have higher damage.
Eternal Blade Dance (Passive) – Increase your attack damage continuously as you dodge enemy attacks.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

A great Blood Code for those using OH-Sword. Blade Dance combined with Eternal Blade Dance can stack up your damage to an incredible amount, and it has high stamina with decent stats all around. Has good gifts, a good Blood Code to mastery.

Blood Sacrifice (Active) – When out of ichor, use HP instead.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

It doesn’t have the best stats. I wouldn’t recommend using this Code.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

Has nice stats, and very nice gifts for any spellcasting/gunslinger build. The unique passive, Blood Grab, is incredible. I would recommend this Blood Code to anyone with a more ranged playstyle. Has great gifts that are worth to master.

Overdrive (Active) – Increases your attack damage until you take damage.
Stun Jail (Active) – Forms a trap that will stun enemies.
Assault Ranker (Active) – Decreases your stamina usage until you take damage.
Genocide Reaper (Active) – Pierce some of the enemy’s defense/resistance on your next attack.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

A situational Blood Code, only used for either speedruns or for clearing trash mobs. Stealth does not work against bosses. Increasing stats that break when damaged is a risky gamble.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

An incredible Blood Code for heavier builds. A+ STR, 247 Weight, and very good gifts that are worth it to master even on non-heavy builds. The unique passive, Firm Stand is amazing for clutch situations.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

Poor stats, high weight and stock, which lets you use more gifts on a heavier build. Has some decent gifts that could prove helpful if mastered.

Panacea Essence (Active) – Purifies any debuffs, blocks them if used before being afflicted.
Scapeblood (Active) – Causes damage taken to be drastically lowered at the cost of stock.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

A Blood Code with amazing gifts everyone should master. As a Blood Code itself, it tends to have low weight causing you to normal or heavy roll on most weapons, but the gifts are absolutely incredible. High value mastery. Can be built for Ichor-heavy builds that also want high MND stat.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

It’s alright as a Blood Code, it has some decent gifts such as Frost Weapon and Red Shoes. I would suggest Atlas or Berserker for those trying out heavy builds, but Fionn might be able to let you use more flexible gift options with decent stats all-around.

Slow Purify (Active) – Purifies slow from you, prevents if used beforehand.
Revenants Hunger (Passive) – You gain more Haze from slain enemies.
Maintained Focus (Passive) – When in focused state, you will lose less focus over time.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

It has some really nice gifts to use while clearing maps, like Return and Increased Haze gain, which are good pick-ups although you do get them a bit later into the game. I wouldn’t use the Blood Code itself though.

Queenslayer

Gifts:

Drain Amp (Passive) – When in focused state, increases your drain rate.
Frenzy Fire (Active) – Shoot a projectile that decreases the target’s focus.
Cleansing Light (Active) – A part of the damage you receive will instead heal.
Circulating Pulse (Active) – OH-Sword/Halberd/Bayonet offensive active skill, a combo of attacks.
Final Journey (Active) – Restore all your HP and increases gifts efficiency, makes you step-dodge, but kills you after a few minutes. (3 minutes, 4.5 minutes with gift length gift equipped)

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

The protagonist Blood Code, so it’s bound to be busted. Final Journey is actually just way too good, it megabuffs your damage, lets you step-dodge on heavy roll, and 3 minutes is often more than enough time to finish a boss fight but if you really need it, you can increase it to 4.5 minutes.
The other gift worth mentioning is cleansing light, that’s really good paired with blood sacrifice.

Leak Resist (Passive) – Increases your resistance to leak.
Leak Purify (Active) – Purifies leak status, blocks if used beforehand.
Guard Stability (Active) – Reduce stamina cost of guarding.
Valiant Heart (Active) – Dodging costs less stamina.
Lifesteal (Passive) – Restore HP when you kill an enemy.

My thoughts on this Blood Code [Update 2]

It has some very nice gifts. Lifesteal is incredible for clearing the map, the sustain it gives is incredible and it can work together with gifts such as Blood Sacrifice to make it even easier. Vitality Up can be situationally good, and leak resist can help vs bosses like Queen’s Guard Reborn with a leak effect.

Stats & What they do [Update 4]

CODE VEIN - Evolving Guide on Everything in the Game [Update 5] - Stats & What they do [Update 4]

Stats

Level: Your character level. As it increases, your base stats increase, but you also apply a level cap to mastering your gifts in areas. Max level (?) = 300.

HP: Your Hit Points. You can increase HP through gifts and items, and gain it back by using gifts, items, and regeneration.
(Regeneration) Max Usage Upgrade = +10 Max Healing Upgrade = +6

Stamina. Your Stamina. You can increase Stamina through gifts and items, and stamina decreases as you perform actions. They regenerate quickly over time.

Stock (Ichor): Your “Action Points”. They will be consumed in order to activate gifts, and can be gained by hitting enemies, blocking attacks, or draining. Drain attacks will also increase your max Ichor Stock by 2, stacking until the Blood Code Ichor Stock Cap, that lasts until you reset at a Mistle or die.

Weight & Mobility (Credits to Ghemron for this): Each blood code has a base mobility. When under 50% of the weight limit for that blood code, you will move up one tier of mobility. For Slow base mobility, being under 50% will achieve Normal mobility, and being under 20% will achieve Quick. At 50% to 100% weight you will achieve the base mobility of your blood code. Moving over your weight limit will move you 1 tier slower, I believe only for Heimdall this matters. Moving past about 130-140% of this weight limit will move you from Normal to Slow.

STR: Scaling stat for weapon attacks & HP.
DEX: Scaling stat for weapon attacks & drain rate.
MND: Scaling stat for stamina, drain rate & light gifts.
WIL: Scaling stat for status resist & dark gifts.
VIT: Scaling stat for damage resist & HP.
FOR: Scaling stat for element resist & stamina.

Companions & What they do [Update 5]

Companions are your partners that will travel with you. You can only bring one at a time, and each with different benefits, that you might want to choose according to your build.

Companions do seem to sometimes make questionable decisions, such as but not limited to:
Staring you down as you die in front of their feet.
Standing still…
Spamming dodge around the boss, although the boss is in no position to attack.
Standing still… While guarding against no attacks thrown towards them.

They are controlled by AI after all. Sometimes, they’ll carry hard through a boss fight.

Io

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cd4e37ee0

Weapon: Dammerung (Halberd)
Drain Type: Vines
Support:
– Sacrifices more HP to heal you for more HP than normal.
– Increases resistance to elemental damage.
– Increases resistance to status ailments.
– Purifies status ailments.

My Opinion on this Companion

Io is one of the best companions, one of the reasons being because she can heal you for more meaning if you do get revived, you don’t have to spend your next move using regeneration. She also protects you from elemental & status damage, and hits pretty hard with her weapon as well.

Louis

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cd5b6a7f2

Weapon: Enduring Crimson (OH-Sword)
Drain Type: Ogre
Support:
– Shoots fire projectiles at enemies that stagger them.
– Deals decent damage that can be reliable for boss fights.
– Improves evasion efficiency.

My Opinion on this Companion

The starting companion, he can deal decent dps on his own, and can be quite helpful in boss fights where he’ll solo the boss while you draw aggro. However, I feel like Jack is a straight-up upgrade for a OH-Sword companion, and he falls off even before that as you unlock Yakumo. He can also be incredibly squishy if he decides not to dodge.

Mia Karnstein

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cd6a9adba

Weapon: Brodiea (Bayonet)
Drain Type: Stinger
Support:
– Shoots multiple projectiles at enemies for decent damage.
– Increases drain rate of weapons.

My Opinion on this Companion

She is incredibly fragile, and can die within a blink of an eye if the boss manages to aggro to her. She can deal decent damage if uninterrupted, so the only time I’d consider her is if you were playing a front-liner style. Hey, at least she’s cute. She also has some of the best dialogue when exploring areas.

Yakumo Shinonome

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cd86014f2

Weapon: Bane of Oni
Drain Type: Hound
Support:
– Kills literally everything on his own like the beast he is
– Shields you that reduces damage of first attack taken.
– Can stagger and will stagger the hell out of anything.
– Can literally out-dps you.

My Opinion on this Companion

Quite possibly the best companion in the entire game yet. Yakumo will single handedly carry you through the entire game. He can handle fighting a huge group of enemies while you fight a single monster, he will constantly stagger enemies (even more if you also use a staggering weapon), amazing at boss fights, deals a ton of damage, has some of the best dialogue, and is the best bro of the story. If you’re struggling for anything, bring Yakumo.

Jack Rutherford

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cf188a5a9

Weapon: Executioner (OH-Sword)
Drain Type: Hound
Support:
– Increases max stamina & refills it.
– Deals a lot of dps and can be allowed on his own, similar to Yakumo.
– Will stagger enemies, although not as much as Yakumo.

My Opinion on this Companion

Jack has been my favorite companion to bring along so far, simply because in Japanese he has the best voice acting in the game. I look forward to him talking about items and ladders during area exploration, and he’s probably the most badass companion you could look for. Combat-wise, he can do decent damage, moreso in my opinion than Louis, the other OH-Sword counterpart. His gift that increases stamina can be really helpful for fights, and he does not die as much as some of the more fragile companions.

Eva Roux

wpgameplay com img 5fa5cd99725ad

Weapon: Libertador (Bayonet)
Drain Type: Vines
Support:
– Uses dark gifts to do high damage, similar to Mia.

My Opinion on this Companion

The Waifu can now come along on your journey. Yes, Eva is actually recruitable if you save her from the Crown of Sand, Successor of the Throat boss fight memory. As a partner, she seems like an upgrade to Mia in that she won’t die as frequently. She seems to be less fragile in that way, and she still deals constant dps with her gifts.
