This guide will tell you how to achieve the Genius Destroyer' achievement. This is achieved by defeating Monsoon, without taking damage on Hard difficulty and above.
Introduction
Monsoon, a boss that can cause no damage, is considered one the most difficult bosses in the entire game. His unpredictable attacks and ability to become intangible to your attack will make him a very difficult opponent to defeat, especially when you are on higher difficulty. Making matters worse is the fact he does not have an easily-reachable checkpoint unlike Sundowner nor Mistral. You will probably have to start over from the beginning if you do make a mistake. Despite many failures and frustrations, I have finally been able to fully understand Monsoon’s attack style. This guide will show how to abuse the attack pattern to destroy Monsoon.
Note that I was able to complete the achievement on Hard. This guide may not be 100% accurate for Very Hard/Revengeance.
The Loadout
The Murasama should always be your primary weapon. It has the highest overall performance among primary weapons. It should be fully upgraded. Also, you will have unlimited fuel for this fight so it won't matter if you absorb or consume.
You can also use the Pincer Blades as a secondary tool. Also known for being one of the most brutal melee weapons ever, the Pincerblades is a great choice. This time, you should increase the weapon's damage to maximum. Its charged strikes will be freakishly strong. Simply hold down the powerful attack button until your weapon flashes. After that, release to deliver a devastating hit. You can unlock additional skills to allow it with up 2 follow-up strikes that can also charged. However, this fight is unlikely to require them due to Monsoon’s agility coupled with the terrible speed the second and three strikes.
You have a lot of options when it comes to armor and wigs. I personally use Infinite Wig A or White Armor. But neither of these options have any practical purpose for this strategy. The damage provided by the yellow and green artificial muscles is slightly increased. However, the downsides of these red muscles are irrelevant if you have unlimited fuel cell and are trying to avoid any damage. They can be a pain in your a*s to obtain, but they can be easily discarded, so I wouldn’t worry much about them.
Fighting the good fight
Monsoon is going to sprint towards you in an attempt to attack you immediately before he begins the fight. To make him regret his actions, hold down on the loading screen the strong attack button so that you can start charging the Pincers as soon the fight starts. Release the blades to deal over 1600(!) To deal over 1600(! ), release the blades to deal with his damage and bring him down to 79%. The Pincers are able to be released as soon as they're ready and do the maximum damage when fully charged.
Monsoon is likely to be severely injured by the blades. Despite their slowness the pincer blades could be made into a block and you will be able defend yourself against his attack. Be careful not to parry too soon or your swing might be cut and Monsoon may take only 2.5%. Another thing to keep an eye on is the Pincer Blades "super armor". This means that the "super armor" of the Pincer Blades will protect you from any damage you take while swinging them. Raiden will not be able to flinch or scream in pain. If you don’t watch out for them, you may take some damage and then just not notice that it was too late.
Monsoon can use six different attacks even if he's not magnetically able.
His first attack, a 7-hit combo using his sais, is his first. You can use the parry input to get it done. His second attack involves a series of four kicks. They come out a bit slower that the sais and have a distinct animation.
His third- and fourth attacks will have him looping behind, instead of attacking your head-on. He can either throw you in the air or deliver a stronger kick. The aerial followup can be parried normally, but you will already have suffered injuries from the kick, so it is not worth mentioning.
Monsoon will fall on your head from the top as his fifth attack. This usually happens if you scroll down to him offscreen. So locking on is a good countermeasure. If he hits on you with this attack, you will either be slashed normally or pinned down and subject to the "A pleasant walks in London” attack. As with the aerial toss you will already have suffered damage long before he starts stabbing. You can simply restart if this happens.
Below you can see Monsoon's most lethal attack at this stage, the Red Phosphorus Grenade. It is visible as a small, green dot on ground.
Monsoon does not use this attack and will not start a fight. This attack is extremely dangerous. You will need to be very attentive to his animations to avoid it.
Although the RP grenade will allow Monsoons to attack you in any direction for about 10-11 seconds, its real danger lies in the fact the explosion will cause you only a tiny amount of damage if you do not use the Defensive Ofensive skill. If Raiden is visibly stumbling back, choking the gas, it will be clear if the explosion caused you harm. Keep reacting quickly and avoiding the smoke blast.
Monsoon will attempt a escape onto a pole when he has 70% health. You can stagger Monsoon using a combo and another charged Pincer Attack to reduce his health to approximately 65% before he can retreat. Although it is not necessary to defeat him this way, it will give you a sense of satisfaction that he can't do anything.
Jack, magnetic force! Nature's force!
After jumping up onto the pole, there will be a brief cutscene showing Monsoon activating his MAGNETIC POWER! and then slowly jumping back onto the gate. You might be able to wait 15 seconds for this cutscene, as you will likely see it a lot.
Monsoon's second wave of garbage will be thrown at you. Each wave will contain more objects that the previous. You can also run away from the flying cars, but they are notorious for blowing up in the face. It is best to cut them the way the game designed. Unless they have turned to black due to you hitting them, the vehicles are likely to hurt you. While most of them can be dealt with by simply waving your sword vigorously to the left and to the right, some may get higher than you. To break these vehicles, swing vertically. You will also need a left and right aiming to deal with them.
The vehicles that have been destroyed can drop EM grenades, and repair nanos faster than the rest of the fighting. You can get bonus BP if you pick them up.
Once you have escaped the barrage vehicle attack, Monsoon jumps back down to the floor and takes out his sais. Monsoon's purple glowing state allows you to dodge all of your attacks, until you can stun his combo by counterattacking and hitting his face to break him down. An EM grenade is also an option to stun Monsoon. However, this strategy does not allow you to obtain the secret dialogue.
After a short delay, he will take exactly 9 steps toward you, starting and ending the walk on his right foot. This is to give him time to attack you, but we will do our best to keep away so he doesn’t use their harder attacks.
If Monsoon is not within range, he will attack from a distance. He will send his various body parts to attack your in very predictable ways that can be easily blocked.
First, he will attempt to attack your with both of his arms. This is a 4-hit combo. Counter-attacking with both arms will stop the combo in its tracks and deal chip damage Monsoon. The second arm is a bit faster than he first, which makes it easier for you to counter.
Next Monsoon will separate his legs and run at the attacker with four kicks. It can be countered, just as the arms, to injure Monsoon. Be aware that they make a short hop before attacking.
Monsoon attacks you by using his limbs. While his legs are being reattached, Monsoon approaches you at a moderate speed. Then he uses his 7-hit combo to hit you with his sais. You can stop him by countering his attack, which will stun and allow you enter blade mode to hit his head. Monsoon is capable of avoiding any attacks however, so don't aim too far towards his neck.
If you fail to hit Monsoon in the head, or even stun him with the counterattack at all, run away from him immediately. Monsoon can use much more powerful versions than his unpowered phase's attacks while magnetized. He can also use two new, more powerful attacks. All of these attacks are only available when you are near him. He will use the same attack pattern as before, so if you stay far away, you can still hit his head.
Monsoon has a new attack that is similar to LQ84i's charging strike. Monsoon can do it multiple times and continues if blocked.
Monsoon has another attack, and it is extremely dangerous. Monsoon disa*sembles into tornadoes and starts firing at you. It is extremely difficult to block or avoid this attack without getting hit.
After you have successfully hit Monsoons head, he is likely to fall apart completely. I hope you've got him in your grasp by now.
Once you have reached Monsoon’s forehead, attack it a few more times before preparing the Pincer Blades in preparation for a charged attack. Monsoon will need to rebuild his body so you should release the blades when he hits it the ground. No matter how much he does, he will still be hit hard by the swing. This will reduce his health to approximately 40%, but not less than 40%, and put him on his back. You can hit him with this opportunity a few more time before he has the chance again to attack you. Monsoon normally will perform another garbage throwing attack. However, if his health is below 40%, he will skip the attack and immediately begin his next phase.
The Utopia of Death
After Monsoon has been reduced down to 40% health, Monsoon jumps onto the World Marshal's building and reveals a large pile of trash which he will send spinning at your face. You will need a parry to knock it back a bit and then to parry it once more as it approaches before you can slice it with Blade Mode.
Monsoon will jump to the next phase after you have destroyed the garbage wheels. It is important to be alert that Monsoon will immediately use his Separation Attack as soon as Raiden's camera returns.
Once Monsoon's body has been dismembered once more, you can again use the charged Pincer attack to a*sault it. If you are successful, it will reduce Monsoon's overall health to 20%.
Monsoon's final wave will then throw an additional set of objects at them. Remember that the objects may not come at you in their original order. If you are careful, you'll be fine.
Ending the fight
Monsoon will send you another garbage wheel if your health reaches 10%. Monsoon is going to finish his job by destroying it in the same fashion as the first.
Once Monsoon raises the monument and points it towards Raiden, you'll need to perform 3 button presses. Use Blade Mode and Ninja Run to jump onto Raiden's monument and slice the APC. An execution will kick Monsoon into a wall. If you fail to perform any of the above, you will instantly be killed and have to start over. DO NOT restart from the 'dead' menu, as it will count the damage you took in the process of being impaled/smacked/thrown in the next fight and you will NOT recieve the No Damage award. You will be asked not to exit but to go to the title screen.
Once you have provided the required inputs, Monsoon can be trapped against the wall.
FAQ
Q: Why didn't I get the No Damage award? What are you waiting for?
A: You can regain your health once Monsoon has lifted the monument. As mentioned previously, you probably got hit while swinging pincers and didn’t notice until it was too bad. During the lulls, be sure to check your health bar to make sure that you didn't get hit.
Q: What is the best way to get the weapons I need?
A: The Murasama may be obtained by completing R-7, Assa*sination attempt. R-04 is Hostile Takeover to unlock the Pincer Blades. They must be purchased at a moderate price in the Customize Screen before they can be upgraded or used as other items.
Q: What's the point in using EM grenades to stun Monsoon instead?
A: Refer to below.
(BONUS) Secret dialogue
Monsoon will try and frustrate the fight by telling you mockingly to finish him off.
This is an extremely unsatisfying method to beat him. You may not know, however, that there is an alternate route that can be used under certain conditions. Monsoon is more likely to scream in terror if he isn't fought aggressively and not given EM grenades.
My testing shows that "aggressiveness is not measured on your overall DPS. It is measured on how well you combine. You can build a huge combo by using the Pole Arm secondary rather than the Pincer Blades. However, this will greatly prolong the fight due its low damage potential. It is possible to still get a large combo against the Pincers. You can use a lot of sword strikes on Monsoon while you are staggered and not try to hit him again using the Pincer combo.
Listening to Monsoon’s voice lines before a phase transformation will allow you to tell if the conditions are being satisfied. They change from mockery, amus*ment, to fear and self doubt.
I've also noticed that if you didn't meet the game's draconic conditions, if you restart from the checkpoint when Monsoon launches the monument, you suddenly will meet the conditions and Monsoon will freak out as normal.
Conclusion
I hope this guide helped to get you the achievement. I won’t make any more guides similar to this one in the future. I don’t think anything you say will change that. But maybe I’ll change my mind someday.
