Perks

 
Characters get perks as they level up if you’ve researched Survivor Management. It’s a pretty basic mechanic. However, it can be fined tuned with certain weapons and items. You can save before speaking to people in order to rule out more common perks so you can get to better ones (Doctor’s Bag variant for First Aid maybe unlocks MacGyver, for example).
