Introduction

Compatibility

You might be running into compatibility issues later in the guide if you do not meed these standards. In order to make sure you can properly play this mod, make sure you have the following:

  • The recommended specs for the game. This game is quite old, but it can still be demanding on lower end systems.

  • Windows 10, but it can work on older systems. Compatibility is best on the latest Windows 10 though.

  • An internet connection (how are you reading this?)

  • A dedicated GPU. Sonic generations struggles to run on integrated graphics, either it be AMD or Intel. The project unleashed mod is quite demanding, which can lead to a poor experience, or low frame rates. If you are running this game on a laptop, you might have performance issues due to this. You can get away with this though, just by running the game at a lower resolution and playing around with your system. But i will not be getting into that.

  • At least 15-20GB Hard drive or space remaining to put mods in. For reference, the unleashed mod is 2.3GB

  • A controller. This makes the game easier to play, since it was made for controllers in mind. If you don’t have one, don’t worry!!! the game is still playable, it just might be difficult or confusing depending on the controls. Xbox 360/Xbox one controllers are recommended, but you can use a PS4 Controller, and a Nintendo Switch pro controller if you know what you’re doing.

  • 7-Zip. This will help shorten the process needed for getting the mods inside of the file directories. You can do this without it, but this guide will be showing you how to do it with it. Winrar works the same, but 7-Zip works better, and is free.

If you at least are checked for these steps, then you will have higher luck of having an enjoyable experience. Without any further or do, lets get straight into how to get this set up!

Instructions

From here on out, there will be instructions with steps on how to do things. Follow them carefully to make sure you do it correctly.

Step 1. Installing Unleashed Project and mod manager

This first step is to get the Unleashed Project and the mod manager for it. To do this, simply go to the website bellow to get the unleashed project. This includes the required files for starting this process.

Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ErRoQp04-V6ZoPX0-3vi3m7QP6Y86MhE/view

Depending on your internet speed, it might take a while to download this file, since it is 2.3 Gigabytes.

Once you are done downloading this file, you need to open your file explorer. To do this, either click on the file icon on the windows task bar, or click the Windows key on your keyboard to open the start menu, and type in “File Explorer”.

You will then need to find the downloads section. You can either do this by clicking the downloads button on the left of quick access

Or you can go to This PC > Local Disk C (may depend on what drive you’re using). > Users > Your username (aka max, alex, jones, the name you chose when you got your PC). > Downloads.

If you downloaded this to another location, check your desktop, and other folders for such thing.

The file we downloaded should be called “sonic_generations_unleashed_project_1.0-r2.7z”. If you have all of this, make sure you remember where you put it. Onto the next step!

Now, we have to find our Sonic Generations file location for the game itself. To do this, you can simply find the sonic generations game on steam, right click it from where it is on the left side, hover over “Manage”, then click on “Browse Local Files”. It should open where the game is, on wherever you installed it.

From here, you need to go back to where you have the unleashed project file, and you actually need to get the files inside of the zip folder. To do this, you can either double click on the file, or extract the files into another folder. If you don’t know what that is, that’s okay! We just need to get into the actual files itself. Once you either go into the zip, or extract it, you should see a folder called “Unleashed Project Final”. Next, we have to click into that folder, and it should now show a “Mods” folder, a “Manuals” folder, “SonicGMI.exe”, “README.TXT”, and “cpkredir.dll”. If you see these, you’re going in the right direction!!!

The next step would to be to take these files, and copy them to where our sonic generations game is installed. simply select all of the files with CTRL+A, then either copy it too the directory of the game, or drag and drop it into the folder from the window that’s open.

Once you do that, and you go to your game folder and now see those new items appear there, you’re all set! Onto the next step!!!

Setting the mods up with the Mod Launcher

Now that you’re in the folder of the game, find where it says “SonicGMI.exe”, and open that file. It might ask you to update it, but just ignore it for now by clicking cancel. If you’re successfully able to get into it, you should see 3 mods listed. it should show

  • Unleashed Project
  • Unleashed Project Low End
  • Unleashed FxPipeline Shaders

If you have this, you’re all set!!! Simply just enable the Unleashed Project mod, and the FX Pipeline for the best experience. Low end can vary.

If you’re able to open the game, it should show another screen upon starting up, showing the unleashed project’s developers. You’re all good to go! Click “New Game” And start playing! it should give you the tutorial stage that was in the original game, so you’re on the right track.

Note that clicking “New Game” Does not affect actual game progress in sonic generations. The mod has its own save data, and leaves generations untouched. If this isn’t the case, then your issue may vary.

If you’re able to play through, and get to the hub world, you’re all set! But if you got a game crash, then we might need to do some other additional tasks to get the game working…

RTX Fix

If the game crashed right after completing the tutorial level, then you might have an RTX or a newer GPU that doesn’t play well with the game. If you have encountered this, then i cant guarantee success on getting this to work. But for many, it has. So ill be running down how to fix this.

You need to go to this website, and do the following. Scroll down until you see the options for downloading.

https://gamebanana.com/mods/50774

When you scroll down on the Project Unleashed RTX FIX, you can either download the mod manually and put it in your mods directory, or you can click “HedgeModManager 1-CLICK INSTALL”. I will be teaching you how to use the one click install, since it does it for you.

Once you click the “HedgeModManager 1-CLICK INSTALL”, your browser will tell you what you want to open. Open the HedgeModManager, and it should show you a page of what the mod includes, the name, and everything.

Click download, and let it download. This might take a while.

Once finished, make sure you drag the mod to the top of the mods list, and try to save and play the game again. If you can load into the hub this time after the tutorial, you have fixed your game, and can enjoy your mods!

Make sure your mods are configured like this! If not, then the game will crash!!!

Conclusion

For most users, this guide should work, or they should have already installed the mods required. If there is a question you need answered, then simply leave a comment and i will do my best to get back to you. If this guide helped you, then i’m glad!

I created this guide because I’ve had so many issues with getting this to work, and not very many videos on YouTube help very much with this problem. I discovered this easy fix, so I wanted to share it with those who aren’t able to play the mod!

This is my first guide, so well, let me know how I did! and thank you for reading this!!! I hope you have fun with your game now!
